Today in diabetic lifestyle we will discuss why it is important to have a sense of humor as a diabetic.
“You can turn painful situations around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything…you can survive it” said Bill Cosby. We need humor as a way to suppress the depressive times we have had or will have as a diabetic. We can survive being diabetic if we have humor. And, of course, follow a proper regimen with our healthcare team.
I don’t remember exactly who stated this, but it goes something like this: “Laughter is the best medicine.” In order for us to have a sense of humor we need to be able to laugh at our own plight, in this case, diabetes. To laugh brings out so many positive things in us. We relieve stress and help our immune system which can bring our blood sugar down. Mark Twain stated, “Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritation and resentments slip away, and a sunny spirit takes their place.” So it is important for us as diabetics to have a sense of humor about diabetes, which is our chronic disease. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “If I had no sense of humor, I would long ago have committed suicide.”
There is a website dedicated to diabetic humor, it is called 1HappyDiabetic. I love Bill and Suzanne, the creators of this site. You may have seen Bill and Suzanne on YouTube which is where Bill first got started, I believe, and where I first saw and met him. They have created this site as a way to laugh at diabetes and to bring other diabetics together to make fun of their plight in life, so that we can all laugh.
With that in mind, I bring you some of the photos that they have on their site to laugh at our diabetes. Check them out below:

Adam,
That was very nice of you to do such a nice article and mention our videos and site.
You hit the nail on the head. Diabetes is tough everyday. We need to smile and share that smile with others. That really makes me happy! It makes everyone happy if you can make someone laugh about a hard situation and come to terms knowing there are many people out there stuggling with the same thing.
I think acceptance is the hardest part of Diabetes. It is something that has challenged me for years. And I still have issues with it. I think it is normal, but laughter and humor about diabetes don’t see that line. You can be in amazing control or in a struggle with your diabetes, but you can still laugh and smile about something related to diabetes. I love that.
Thanks again Adam for sharing this post and being a strong member and supporter of http://www.1HappyDiabetic.com
Cheers,
Bill
