Today in diabetic technology we will be talking about innovative technology that may be coming in the future. One way that some students are becoming innovative is with a new type of diabetic technology. Diabetes Mine had an online competition to encourage creative new tools for improving life with diabetes called “The Diabetes Mine 2009 Design Challenge.” Many individuals and groups participated; a total of 150 entries were received. There were three winners. In Part 1, we will show the Grand Prize Winner. It was two students from Northwestern University in Illinois, Eric Schickli and Samantha Katz with their LifeCase and LifeApp System.

LifeCase and LifeApp form a complete diabetes management system using the phones users already carry, letting them leave cumbersome equipment cases and logbooks at home, and pumps concealed. LifeCase incorporates a glucose meter, lancer, and strip storage into a protective iPhone case. LifeApp integrates control of glucose meters, insulin pumps and logbooks into a single easy-to-use iPhone interface.
