This week in Diabetic Meal Planning we will continue from diabetic lifestyle our “Portion Distortion” series. Here we will give you five tips on how to avoid portion distortion to help your diabetic meal plan.
TIP #1 – When looking at the Nutrition Facts label, get in the habit of glancing at the serving size (this may be futile; sometimes it’s in grams or another unit that’s not user-friendly) and automatically doubling or tripling the calories, carbohydrates, and other nutrients you check.
TIP #2 – When at a restaurant, send half your plate back to the kitchen to be wrapped up as soon as you can without being rude.
TIP #3 – Take out some measuring cups and train yourself — using water, dry rice or beans, and some play-dough — to know what recommended portion sizes look like in your everyday bowls.
TIP #4 – Start training yourself to only order small sizes when ordering anything at a restaurant, snack bar, etc.
TIP #5 – Use a smaller plate when eating at home, and away from home, always leave some food on your plate (stay away from the “clean plate club”).
With these five tips you will be able to control your portions and serving sizes for your diabetic meal plan. For more on diabetic meal planning email us or leave a reply below.
